Why a list, not a timetable

A salsa class Dudley keeps

Nobody locally teaches adults salsa on a regular footing, so rather than guess at a night and hope people come, we let the list decide. Each name is a vote. When there are enough of them, we book a room close to where most of you live and the class opens with a full floor from the very first night.

That’s also why the price can stay at £9 without any strings. There are no blocks to buy and nothing to renew — you pay on the night you come. Miss a few weeks for holidays or overtime and nothing lapses; you just turn up again and carry on.

Joining costs nothing and doesn’t commit you to anything. The postcode box simply helps us choose where to hire the room, so the class lands somewhere sensible for Dudley, Stourbridge, Halesowen and everywhere in between.

The Salsa list

Four boxes. Your name moves the salsa class one step closer to opening.

Joining the interest list costs nothing; the room gets booked when the numbers add up.

The first few weeks

What your feet pick up first

Shaped by the room, week by week

01

The basic step

The forward-and-back pattern everything else hangs off, practised until it stops needing a thought.

02

Hearing the count

Finding the beat inside a busy salsa track — taught properly rather than assumed.

03

A first turn

Right turn first, then the cross-body lead — both learnt slowly in two halves before they join up.

04

Swapping partners

Partners rotate around the room all class long, so arriving solo is the norm, not the exception.

None of this follows a rigid syllabus. The teacher shapes each class around who turned up, moving on when the room is flying and slowing down when it needs a breather. A few weeks in, the music starts to sound less like noise and more like instructions — that’s the moment most people remember.

Because the whole room joined from the same list, there’s no established clique to break into and no couples fortress in the corner. Just a floor of people who all decided they fancied learning salsa at roughly the same time.

We don’t sell or lend shoes or kit. Smooth-soled shoes you already own are plenty to start with, and the teacher can point you towards proper dance shoes later if you get hooked.

Why people put their names down

I’d wanted to learn for years but everything was in Birmingham on a school night. Putting my name down took a minute, and it’s the first class I’ve kept going to.

What people ask before joining

Join the list ↑
How long until the salsa class actually opens?

It opens once the list has enough names to fill a room. Salsa tends to fill faster than most styles, and telling a friend or two genuinely speeds it up.

Is it fine to turn up to salsa solo?

Absolutely. Most people come on their own. Partners rotate around the room, so everyone dances with everyone and nobody is left standing at the side.

What sort of salsa will we be learning?

Social salsa — the kind you can take to a night out and actually use. The teacher starts with the basic step, timing and simple turns, then builds from there.

Which shoes suit a first salsa class?

Anything smooth-soled that lets you spin — old trainers will do to start. We don’t sell or lend footwear, so bring your own.

I danced years ago — will I be too rusty?

Not at all. A class that opens off a list is a mix of returners and complete beginners, and the teacher pitches it so both feel at home.

Can I pay for several salsa classes upfront?

We don’t sell bundles on purpose. It’s £9 when you come, and nothing when you don’t, so there’s never anything left to use up.

Why does the form ask for my postcode?

The first part of your postcode helps us decide where to hire the room, so the class ends up somewhere handy for most of the people on the list.

Is the salsa class just for adults?

The weekly class is aimed at adults, and complete beginners are especially welcome. If you’re asking about younger dancers, choose the right age on the form so we know who is interested.
