Hip-hop around Dudley is mostly taught to children. This list is for adults.
Hip-hop without the school run
Hip-hop dance came out of the Bronx block parties of the 1970s, and its heart is the groove: a relaxed bounce or rock through the body that everything else sits on. Locally, most hip-hop is taught through children’s and youth dance schools. That’s great for them, but it leaves the adults who grew up on the music with nowhere comfortable to learn it.
Our answer is an interest list. It costs nothing to join, and it tells us two things: how many adults want hip-hop, and where they live. Once the numbers are there, we hire a room that suits people from Tipton, Wednesbury, Coseley and everywhere in between, then open the class to everyone on the list together.
From then on it is £9 on the night, paid when you walk in. No monthly fee, no uniform, no block to finish. If football, shifts or a poorly child get in the way, you miss nothing but that week’s groove.
Groove first, tricks later
Shaped by the room, week by week
Bounce and rock
The two core grooves — down on the beat and forward through the chest — repeated until they feel natural rather than self-conscious.
Old-school steps
Party moves with names like the running man and the Roger Rabbit, which are more fun than they sound and build coordination fast.
Musicality
Hitting accents, riding the snare and slowing down for the half-time bits, so you dance the song rather than just the count.
Freestyle moments
Short, low-pressure chances to mix steps in your own way, done all together so nobody feels watched.
The teacher picks the music and plans each class around the people who turn up. Some sessions concentrate on foundations and footwork; others build a short routine you can keep improving over several weeks. It’s structured enough that beginners know what to do, loose enough that the class can follow the energy of the room.
Style matters more than flexibility. You don’t need to spin on your head or drop into the splits — breaking is a separate discipline — just a willingness to bend your knees and let the beat move you. Adults who once danced at house parties often find the old instincts come back faster than expected.

Why they joined the list
I’ve loved hip-hop since school, but every class near me was full of ten-year-olds. Something built for adults is exactly what was missing.
My daughter dances every weekend. I fancy a class of my own, and she’s already offering to correct my bounce.
Is the hip-hop class aimed at adults rather than kids?
Yes. It is planned for grown-ups, with adult pacing and music. Younger dancers can register interest on the form, but the weekly class itself is for adults.
Is hip-hop just another name for street dance?
Street dance is the umbrella term for styles born in clubs and on the streets. Hip-hop is one of those styles, built on grooves such as the bounce and the rock, with its own party steps and history.
Will the hip-hop class include breaking or head spins?
No. Breaking is its own discipline with specialist training. This class focuses on standing hip-hop — grooves, footwork and choreography — so your head stays well off the floor.
Do I need to know hip-hop music to join?
Not at all. The teacher chooses the tracks and explains the rhythm as you go. If you already love the music, you’ll start hearing it in a whole new way.
What shoes suit an adult hip-hop class?
Clean trainers with a bit of grip are ideal. Footwear isn’t something we stock, so turn up in your own.
Am I too old to start learning hip-hop?
No. Grooves can be scaled up or down, and the class welcomes adults at every age and fitness level. Go at your own pace and the teacher will adapt.
Are the hip-hop tracks old school or current?
A mix. The teacher blends classic nineties and noughties hip-hop with newer tracks, choosing clean versions where it matters, so you hear a range of eras over the weeks.
When will the hip-hop class start in Dudley?
Once the hip-hop list is long enough to fill a room, we book one and message everyone on it with the date, time and place.
